Frosty mornings, frosty seeds

mini greenhouse sowings progress on 19.02.08mini greenhouse sowings progress on 19.02.08 closeup 2

Oh how different the weather has been last week and this week since my last posting where I said and I quote:
it is sometimes a risky strategy to start sowing this early in February due to there possibly being more frosts before March. How true so please take note!

I felt really sorry for my first sowings of seeds in the mini greenhouse as there has been frosts most nights. So sorry I brought them into the house and put them on a windowsill above a radiator.

Hey presto over night there was some movement and I now have little green calabrese seedlings. I check on them daily and spray the soil with water as the central heating will dry out the soil quite quickly.

I will update my blog on Saturday 23rd Feb with whether there has been progress or not in the outdoor raised beds with my seeds sown Feb 10th 2008.

Always thought people in the UK were lucky. We’re still buried under a few feet of snow in Canada. So all we can think about is the idea of gardening during the winter months.

Best of luck on your plot this year! Look forward to checking your blog in future and see how it’s going.

Hi There, i would like to ask a question that i think you might be able to answer as i’ve been following your blog. The question is :- the tomatoes seeds i keep sowing, seems to grow long (1 1/2 “ ;) then bend over, go thin at the bottom of the stem and then die. Any answers will be grateful

Hi Ceara08, thanks for your best wishes.
My boyfriend and I are off on holiday to Canada this year but its a bit too cold for me in the snowy season. You are correct, we are lucky in the UK for weather but it doesn’t stop us moaning about the rain and then about the sun!

    Hi Graham,
    Thanks for your question.
I have checked on the internet as I wasn’t sure but it is “Damping Off” whch is the problem. This is a fungal soil or water condition sometimes caused by poor hygiene, cool or humid conditions or overwatering. It causes the seedlings to either not emerge from the soil at all or when they do emerge their stems thin, bend and die from the fungal disease.

To prevent damping off use clean containers, clean water, fresh compost and don’t crowd your seedlings, sow thinly instead.

Once you have damping off fungal disease in the soil unfortunately you will need to start again with your seed sowing. There are copper fungicides on the market which prevent the disease from forming in the soil but there is no organic solution.
