Choices, Choices – Different Varieties and how to choose.

I have chosen the vegetable varieties for the Master Plan because:

  • They have the best disease resistance, i.e. Carrot Resistafly (resistant to carrotfly) and Lettuce TinTin (resistant to aphids and downey mildew)
  • They are varieties which can be frozen and still retain their flavour, (peas and beans)
  • They can be stored overwinter, i.e. James Scarlet Inter – Carrot is a maincrop variety.
  • They can be grown over consecutive months for repeat cropping, i.e. Spring Onions, Carrots, Radishes, Beans.
  • The produce can stay on the plant for weeks without deteriorating,
  • Some are recommended by the Royal Horticultural Society for variety excellence, (Cabbage – Greyhound, Dwarf Bean – Ferrari, Radish – french breakfast, Runner Beans – Red Rum and White Lady)
  • Where 2 different varieties have been chosen, this is a backup plan if one doesn’t produce properly
  • For example with the two different varities of cabbage, one can be picked as spring greens (Frostie) until the other forms cabbage heads.(Greyhound)
  • The vegetable choices are the majority of what we normally eat from the supermarket with a few interesting new veg thrown in like Kale, Chard and Leaf Beat, which I have never eaten before.
